Size of a Jalapeno Plant

The increase of jalapeno (Capsicum annum) plants is influenced by the growing states. Under optimum circumstances, a jalapeno plant can grow an average of 3 feet tall and can spread equally broad. The magnitude of the jalapeno plant may vary depending on factors including area, environmental conditions, endometriosis, and structural assistance.

Spacing Requirements

Jalapeno plants must be spaced about 12 to 14 inches apart in rows which are 2 to 3 feet apart. If spaced too closely, plants will be made to compete for nutrients and water which can limit plant growth. However, plants can help encourage each other structurally and will help provide shade to your sun-sensitive pepper pods, therefore some overlapping of those plants is okay.

Environmental Conditions

Jalapeno plants need full sun and moist soil. However, over-saturating restricts the amount of air space in the soil, inhibiting root growth. If root growth is restricted, the plant may not be able to obtain the very important water and nutrients to encourage growth above ground. Jalapeno plants also need warm atmosphere and soil temperatures. Plants need protection until both day and nighttime temperatures are regularly at or above 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the weather has warmed, hardening off is needed to stop shocking your own plants.

Nutrients

Jalapeno plants respond well to routine nitrogen fertilization at least once every month, which promotes leaf growth. Weeding is essential, as weeds threaten plant growth since they compete for soil nutrients and water. Removing any flowers or fruit for the first four to six weeks after planting your jalapeno plant will allow it to direct nutrients to root growth and total plant growth.

Structural Support

Because of this magnitude jalapeno plants can achieve, it can be necessary to provide structural support for the plant. This can be achieved with a cage like those utilized for plants. Providing support will avoid stems from breaking under the weight of the jalapenos and allow your plant to achieve its maximum growth potential.
