How to Cut a Schefflera

Playing the scientific title game with scheffleras can be challenging. The most commonly grown is Schefflera actinophylla, otherwise called the Queensland umbrella tree, which can be winter hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 10 to 12. The Hawaiian dwarf schefflera (S. arboricola) thrives in zones 9 to 11. Adding their two pennies would be the lesser known New Zealand schefflera (S. digitata) and also tupidanthus (S. pueckleri), hardy in zones 10a to 10b and 9a to 10b, respectively. While scheffleras differ in size, form and hardiness, none tolerate frost, and care requirements are comparable for all. Capable of attaining overwhelming dimensions, scheffleras are generously forgiving when it comes to pruning and respond well to even severe cutbacks.

Prune scheffleras using clean, sharp pruning shears at or slightly before the start of the growing season, late in February or early in March.

Clip all stems up to one-third to keep plant dimensions and a pleasing look. Make a clean cut just above a leaf. Do not leave ragged stem edges. Be careful not to nick or damage stem regions that you don’t plan to prune out. This plant’s bark is delicate and easily hurt.

Prune back overly large or unsightly scheffleras by as much as one-half to rejuvenate older specimens. These plants gain greatly from occasional radical cutbacks.

Pamper the schefflera houseplant a little to help it weather pruning shock, which can be usually mild. Keep it in a warm, brightly lit room from direct sunlight. Do not expose these tropicals to temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The favored daytime temperature range is between 65 and 75 F, with nighttime temperatures above 60 F being optimum. Protect this plant from hot or cold drafts, which damage it.

Pinch out growing tips as they look while the schefflera is actively growing. You can safely take up to two or three inches from each suggestion to promote branching and fullness.

Prune large outdoor specimen limbs that droop and block walkways, sidewalks or driveways as needed.
